We tend to place large amounts of value upon expensive things, and little value on everyday things. As a painter Rowan is interested in exploring ordinary and commonplace scenes with the intent to uncover the value and beauty in what is so easily taken for granted. His bright, vibrant colours and loose handling suggest a childlike playfulness. It is not about representing the true seen colours in a landscape but more about choosing a colour that suits the composition – interchangeable colours that still evoke the nature of the object such as blue trees or orange grass. Through these simple little paintings we are shown that beauty can be found in our own backyard, and reminded to take time to nurture an appreciation of what we already have.
