JUNKO HAGIWARA
Artist Statement
"Junko Hagiwara is that rare thing, someone who just paints what she sees. No theories, ego, career-mindedness, first drafts, reworking, photographic sources, image manipulation or any other baggage. Her choice of medium, watercolour, says a lot. Unlike oils or acrylic, there is no hiding mistakes or imperfections. Every brushstroke is a permanent commitment, there for all to see. This, of course, leavers no margin for error, but as the works here show, it allows a visual truth of the rarest kind.’" - David Messser
Junko was born in Melbourne, Australia. When she was 7, she moved with her family to Tokyo, Japan. They migrated to Australia when she was 18. Junko graduated from Macquarie University and later studied for two years at the Julian Ashton Art School, Sydney, and for another two with Bela Ivani, also in Sydney. Since then she has exhibited in solo and group shows and entered and won a number of competitions and art prizes. She had a residency at Paris through Defiance Gallery in 2010.
